As part of the review process, investment performance and the effect of policy charges need to be assessed. In some cases, older plans provide only a return of the contributions paid in the event of death prior to retirement. This can be significantly less than the underlying fund value. On the other hand, many of these older plans can incorporate valuable guarantees which in many cases, are not widely publicised by the pension provider. All these factors make obtaining wholly independent advice essential.
